Is Bread Making an Art or a Science? - Three Essential Tips to Remember So Your Bread Doesn't Flop!

Most of us will have had at one time or another experienced a disaster or two when making bread at home. After all, the process of making bread at home seems to be a process of trial and error to bake that perfect loaf of bread.

Is Bread Making an Art or a Science?

Bread Pan

Making bread is both an art and a science. Cooking and baking is a creative activity that is enjoyed by many people around the world. Though serious bakers amongst us would agree that it takes discipline and effort to make good bread consistently.

The process of bread making is not a complex one, but the steps in the process have to be followed carefully. Whether you are kneading dough to bake in your oven, or using your machine, a certain degree of diligence is required to follow the process.

Using Your Machine

If you use a machine, things are much simpler, though you still have to ensure that you measure out the ingredients carefully, and place them into the bread pan in the right order. Cooking disasters happen for a reason, and sometimes we play the role of the mad scientist in a laboratory trying to work out where we have gone wrong!

One little error could result in a disappointing loaf of bread being baked. But alas, there is always another day to bake another perfect loaf!

It's All in the Measuring

So the next time that you decide to make your next loaf of bread, pay careful attention to measure out your ingredients carefully. It could make the difference between making a perfect loaf of bread versus a flop.

Adding Ingredients in the Correct Order

Read the recipe carefully and take note of the order in which ingredients are to be placed into the bread pan. Certain ingredients do not interact well and care needs to be taken to avoid placing these ingredients together. For example, salt and yeast if placed together can interact in an undesirable way.

Bread Proofing

If making your loaf by hand, proof your bread correctly for the recommended number of times at the right intervals so that the dough will rise nicely. Proofing bread dough is an essential skill if you want to be a proficient baker.

Enjoy the art and science of making bread at home. As the saying goes practice makes perfect!
